Overview
ABOUT THE POSITION
Structural Engineer – Building Design | Hybrid
As part of our structures growth across our footprint, we're adding structural engineer who would serve an important role in planning, analysis, design, detailing of new building structures and existing building renovation, with a current focus on transportation-related buildings such as rail & transit stations and parking facilities. The ideal candidate should possess a “can-do” attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast paced, and fun environment. The position includes significant opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB’s emerging building design practice in Washington DC and Tysons Corner VA.
Develops, organizes, and implements structural planning, analysis, preliminary and final design document preparation for transportation related building structures
Supports and mentors junior team members in the development of design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, etc. Provides technical oversight and review of structural designs.
Monitors of project budgets and schedules
Assists with proposals and presentations for rail/transit pursuits
Support building structural projects across VHB’s footprint
Skills & Abilities
Extensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in structural building engineering
Must possess strong technical skills with knowledge of various building structural systems and codes
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrates excellence in verbal presentations and technical writing
Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
Robust technical and critical thinking skills
Strong project management skills
Proactive and self-motivated, with excellent attention to detail and quality
Ability to lead and collaborate with a team of staff working remotely
Enthusiasm to learn, seek out opportunities, and take responsibility
Motivated to mentor junior staff
Strong organizational and time management skills
Proficiency in the use of structural engineering 3D Finite Analysis and BIM software such as RISA 3D, STAAD pro, SAP2000,RAM Concept, RAM Structural System, MathCAD, Revit, AutoCAD, and Microstation
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required, master’s degree preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience)
Minimum 5-8 years of structural engineering experience required.
Licensed PE (Professional Engineer) or ability to obtain within 6 months
Experience with new structural building construction and structural building renovations on shallow and deep foundation
Proficient in the design of steel and concrete structures with a solid understanding of the International Code and local codes; familiarity with wood and heavy timber structures is a plus.
Experience working on station projects owned and operated by transit agencies such as WMATA, VRE, Amtrak, and/or other rail transit adjacencies preferred
Familiarity with Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build project delivery
Hiring Salary Range - $100,000 - $130,000. However, the final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VHB offers a holistic benefits package which can be found here.
