Vice President, Media Relations

This role is responsible for working with department leaders to oversee and execute aspects of external communications, primarily by driving premium news placements and engaging in aggressive outreach to a broad section of media, including reporters who cover issues and policies related to travel to and within the United States. An ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, skilled in the current news landscape and a holder of media relationships, with an eagerness to secure reporting on the priorities and mission of U.S. Travel Association.

Responsibilities

Drive frequent/daily press opportunities on U.S. Travel priorities and the associationís principal spokespeople, with an emphasis on securing premium placements in broadcast, legacy and Beltway news outlets and online/digital news sources
Provide leadership to media team in collaboration with SVP, Communications
Actively seek new media-facing opportunities and bring new and innovative ideas to the table.
Respond promptly to media inquiries related to U.S. Travel, its research and other travel industry issues
Manage the interview preparation process for association spokespeople, including working with team on key background and talking points.
Establish and maintain contact with issue-specific reporters, media organizations and industry/trade media
Work with the media and policy teams to quickly draft press releases, statements, and talking points in response to an always moving and changing news cycle
Interface with SVP Communications and internal departments to develop and ensure consistency in messaging across the organization
Provide editorial review of communications materials
Support IPW media activities in collaboration with IPW Press Operations consultant
Support generation of daily clip report
Maintain media database (Cision)
Monitor and stay informed of trade trends, policy issues and legislation impacting the travel industry and track competitors and others related to and adjacent to our industry.
Cross-train on process for credentialing media attending IPW and manage the eventís Media Marketplace online press room and site press room.
Mentor and support communications professionals in developing content and communications strategies

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelorís Degree in Communication, Journalism, or related field. Masterís degree in related field preferred.
Minimum of 12-15+ years of relevant communications and media relations experience working in a trade association, Capitol Hill, political campaigns, or PR firms.
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience of managing, developing, and mentoring direct reports
Established media contacts at the national and regional level
Demonstrable strategic capabilities related to increased industry positioning
Experience as an on the record spokesperson
Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex issues
