hehehe that's not funny but it is... I know I have had some great black women teachers... I have worked with some business partners that are black women in charge and well, they do a good job but definitely can be difficult for folks to work with. I happen to be able to deal with black women because I love them so much but yea... I've seen this issue first hand. I'd say you just have to be careful who you choose and that really it's more of a stereotype since there should be a good 30% of the BW candidates that are diplomatic and not like
Sister I'm really sorry you have had bad experiences with black female supervisors, because my best supervisor thus far was a black female who everyone loved and respected and I've not had anyone who has compared to her since. Might it be that some females overcompensate in a male dominated world by trying to imitate male behaviors but go a bit overboard with it???
I have had both and to both extremes. The one that eventually became my mentor for a couple of years was not in my field of study but we hit it off just great. She took me under her wing and helped me deal with politics, attitudes and corporate culture issues. She showed me how to effectively manuveur and deal with people regarding race issues and the prejudices they hold especially against black women. She was wonderful and ohhhh how i miss her. The one that was the worst worked for this company that I really wanted to work for and she was in my field. Being young and foolish I just knew she would take me under her arm and continue where my good manager left off. She was horrible the A typical woman that you spoke of but worse. She would sabotage my work, make me look a fool to others, and made sure that i never outshined her in any way. All of the people that worked there had been there for years so they would team up on me. I lasted less than two months. I was heartbroken because up to this point all of my advise and mentoring came from white folks and i really thought that she would help me out with understanding what i should do to further myself in our field. Come to find out it may not have had anything to do with me but the things that she was hiding that she didn't want found out. Me doing my job would have exposed those things.
Make ur decision based on experience and gut feeling. People are who they are for many reasons. Plus there are ways to interview to see how people react under stress. Let her meet the staff, if u decide on a woman, before u officially hire and see what they think. U should never base ur complete decision on perceptions and stereotypes no matter how many u've ran across that fit it. U could very well overlook a gem like urself or even me :-).
I had a bad experiences with a black female supervisor who had actually worked her way up to that position. It seems as if once she got the position that it went to her head. She was very unprofessional!!! Some people know how to act whenever they get a position such as this and some dont.
